IMS facilitates international partnerships
Significant leverage for research funding
Shared cost and risk
SMEs gain global exposure, new opportunities
Large-scale technology trails

IMS facilitates international partnerships and provides a platform to combine complementary skills. IMS provides access to technology that might not be available within a region and offers the possibility to address leading-edge production challenges.

IMS affords each project partner significant leverage in their research funding. This continues to be the classic challenge for all organisations, large and small. IMS provides the vehicle by which each organisation can pool its resources with others within one or more project consortia stretching the value of an individual organization's funding. One participant commented that their company¡¯s research dollars were multiplied almost four-fold.

Through cooperation in IMS, costs, burdens and risks related to R&D can be reduced and shared. By combining end-users of manufacturing technologies with advanced technology producers and research institutions, IMS research is industry-driven and focused on real-world issues ensuring the market relevance of technology improvements.

For smaller businesses, IMS offers the opportunity to "go global" safely and effectively. The IMS Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) provisions enable small businesses to cooperate effectively and on an equal footing with large firms. New market opportunities will arise through improved market intelligence. International cooperation also provides better visibility, and contacts that can lead to new opportunities for further collaboration and other, indirect benefits.

One participant commented that as an SME, the opportunity to work alongside international companies would have never been possible without IMS. Not only do they benefit from the research results, but they also have an opportunity to become part of a global supply chain.
IMS offers technology trials on a large-scale basis, involving a global user community and ensuring general applicability of the technology developed. Inter-regional cooperation in IMS can contribute to global diffusion of manufacturing technologies, including the development of new international manufacturing standards.

IMS offers research institutions and academia the opportunity to work alongside the world's best researchers from industry to develop jointly the next generation of technology.

The market-driven character of IMS R&D means that academics and researchers are part of an effort to transfer valuable technologies through education and training, to future generations. Participation in IMS also ensures that state-of-the-art information is broadly available for curriculum development.

Better return for public funds
Influence direction of innovation
Improves social welfare

IMS can facilitate a better return of pu2007-06-03blicly funded R&D, and is an excellent vehicle for solving problems common to manufacturing industries in all regions including environment, sustainable development, safety and quality of industrial life. By sharing research funding with other entities, the investment is just a fraction of the normal costs.

The successes of IMS projects range from the creation of new manufacturing methods and processes to the study of ergonomics. New companies have spun out of IMS-endorsed research, and new global standards were developed. The world¡¯s largest multi-national corporations to micro-manufacturers have participated and benefited. These successes are documented in various publications including the IMS Impact Report that is a review of the project outcomes from Phase 1 of the IMS program, the IMS Annual Reports that is a yearly review of the projects, their outcomes, and feedback from the researchers through an annual monitoring survey, and in the final reports submitted by each research project describing their research results and potential applications. Other successes are presented in the IMS newsletters along with other news about current programs and initiatives.
