As NCDMM celebrates its 10th anniversary and embarks on its next decade of delivering manufacturing innovation, it seemed fitting for this year’s SUMMIT theme to focus on “Celebrating a Decade and Innovating the Future.” Dynamic presentations will be given on the importance of promoting innovation across the entire manufacturing innovation spectrum—product, process, policy, and education.

SUMMIT 2013 promises to be yet another exciting and informative event filled with opportunities to meet, network, and brainstorm with colleagues from throughout government, industry, and academia. Based on feedback from attendees of past SUMMIT events, this year we’ve adjusted the structure of SUMMIT 2013 to allow for even more networking sessions!

Intelligent Non-hierarchical Manufacturing Networks

Edited by Raúl Poler, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain; Luis Maia Carneiro, INESC Porto, Portugal; Thomas Jasinski, RWTH Aachen University, Germany; Marc Zolghadri, Bordeaux 1 University, France; Paolo Pedrazzoli, University of Applied Science of Southern Switzerland

This book is the main result of the IMS MTP initiative “Intelligent Non-Hierarchical Manufacturing Networks (iNet-IMS) (www.inet-ims.net) that has combined the main results of five FP7 Research Projects recently finalized.

The book provides the latest models, methods and guidelines for networked enterprises to enhance their competitiveness and move towards innovative high performance and agile industrial systems.

In the new global market, competitiveness and economic growth rely greatly on the move toward innovative high performance industrial systems and agile networked enterprises through the creation and consolidation of non-hierarchical manufacturing networks of multi-national SMEs as opposed to networks based on powerful large-scale companies. Network performance can be significantly improved through more harmonious and equitable peer-to-peer inter-enterprise relationships, conforming decentralized and collaborative decision-making models.

Traditional hierarchical manufacturing networks are based on centralized models, where some of the actors involved must adapt themselves to the constraints defined by those who are most dominant. Real-world experiences of such models have revealed some major problems due to the centralized vision of the supply chain and the sub-optimal performance of centralized decision-making. For the current highly dynamic markets, this generates major inefficiencies in operation throughout the supply chain.
This book collects the latest research regarding non-hierarchical manufacturing networks and provides enterprises with valuable models, methods and guidelines to improve their competitiveness.

Subject: Please validate EU research topic proposals before Friday 15 February

Photonics21, responsible for developing the Strategic Research Agenda, has published its proposal for the Photonics Strategic Multiannual Roadmap. As industry association, EPIC encourages companies active in Photonics in Europe to review/comment/validate the roadmap which is the basis in Europe for photonics research and innovation call topics. Maybe you don’t read all 117 pages but read the chapter relevant to your company’s priorities? You can submit your comments till 15 FEBRUARY.
http://www.photonics21.org/download/PhotonicsMultiannualRoadmap/PhotonicsMultiannualStrategicRoadmapDocument.pdf

COMPLETE BACKGROUND on http://www.photonics21.org/
Photonics Strategic Multiannual Roadmap – Public Consultation
Photonics21 has launched the publication consultation of the Photonics Strategic Multiannual Roadmap which outlines an overall direction of a Photonics Public Private Partnership in the frame of Horizon 2020 and provides the basis for photonics research and innovation call topics. The consultation offers the public the opportunity to provide their feedback to the photonics roadmap.
In the frame of the last 12 months the ETP Photonics21 conducted an interactive photonics roadmap process within the seven Photonics21 Work Groups. During the workshop sessions participants were invited to provide their input and views, which were then discussed and lead to consensus on each Work Group section to the Photonics Strategic Multiannual Roadmap. Following these close consultations with representatives of the photonics industry, of research institutes as well as stakeholders of other related European Technology Platforms the Photonics Strategic Multiannual Roadmap has been edited by the Work Group Chairs. Each section was then circulated to the specific Photonics21 Work Group membership for wider consultation. This consultation process has provided opportunities for European industrial and research stakeholders to contribute to the photonics roadmap.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has announced the establishment of a research network that will conduct experiments to further advance current evolutionary directions in the semiconductor industry and make discoveries that will drive new technological innovation beyond what is currently imagined for the electronics industry today.

One of the major problems in the semiconductor industry has been power requirements, excessive heat and other problems associated with the physical limitations of transistors as they get smaller and smaller in size. This will no doubt help the newly emerging nanotechnology industry.

Technological innovations have been an important economic driver of the electronics industry in this country for several decades, and this new network seeks to advance those innovations.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPR), along with 6 academic teams assembled from within the semiconductor and defense industries are establishing the Semiconductor Technology Advanced Research Network. (STARnet)

The establishment of STARnet, with a starting grant of 40 million+ in basic research funding grants hopes to support large university communities to discover technological innovations beyond what might be considered the norm in the electronics industry.

“STARnet is composed of 6 collaborating multi-university teams taking a fresh look at the challenges we face, to find those ideas that will drive innovation for the next several decades. Each of the 6 centers is composed of several university teams jointly working toward a single goal: knocking down the barriers that limit the future of electronics” said Dr. Jeffrey Rogers, PhD, DARPA program manager. “With such an ambitious task, we have implemented a nonstandard approach. Instead of several different universities competing against each other for a single contract, we now have a large teams working collaboratively, each contributing their own peace towards a large and goal.”

DARPA has guaranteed a minimum of $40 million each year to support the research involved, and the combined resources of leading university academics as well as the expertise of DARPA and participating electronics industry companies presents a unique picture of the future of nanotechnology.

The six academic teams are grouped into the following centers:

1). Function Accelerated nanomaterial Engineering (FAME): The FAME Center focuses on nonconventional materials and devices incorporating nanostructures with quantum-level properties to enable analog, logic and memory devices for beyond-binary computation. FAME is hosted at the University of California-Los Angeles with collaborators from Caltech, Cornell, Columbia, MIT, North Carolina State University, Purdue, Rice, Stanford, University of California-Irvine, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Riverside, University of California-Santa Barbara, and Yale.

2). Center for Spintronic Materials, Interfaces and Novel Architectures (C_SPIN): Electron spin-based memory and computation have the potential to overcome the power, performance and architectural constraints of conventional CMOS-based devices. C_SPIN focuses on magnetic materials, spin transport, novel spin-transport materials, spintronic devices, circuits and novel architectures. C_SPIN is hosted at the University of Minnesota with collaborators from Carnegie-Mellon University, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, University of Alabama, University of California-Riverside, University of California-Santa Barbara, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

3). Systems on Nanoscale Information fabriCs (SONIC): Explores a drastic shift in the model of computation and communication from a deterministic digital foundation to a statistical one. Many applications such as imaging processing and communications do not require one hundred percent perfectly error free computation and this Center will produce new strategies and designs optimized with this in mind. SONIC is hosted at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign with collaborators from the University of California-Berkeley, University of California-San Diego, Stanford University, Oregon State University, Princeton University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Carnegie Mellon University.

4). Center for Low Energy Systems Technology (LEAST): The overriding goal is low power electronics. For this purpose it addresses nonconventional materials and quantum-engineered devices, and projects implementation in novel integrated circuits and computing architectures. LEAST is hosted at Notre Dame University, with collaborators from Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Tech, Penn State University, Purdue University, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-San Diego, University of California-Santa Barbara, University of Texas-Dallas and University of Texas-Austin.

5). The Center for Future Architectures Research (C-FAR) The scope of C-FAR is to investigate highly parallel computing implemented in nonconventional computing systems, but based on current CMOS integrated circuit technology. C-Far is based at the University of Michigan with collaborators from Columbia University, Duke University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Princeton university, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-San Diego, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, University of Virginia and the University of Washington.

6). The TerraSwarm Research Center (TerraSwarm): The Center will focus on the challenge of developing technologies that provide innovative, city-scale capabilities via the deployment of distributed applications on shared swarm platforms. Two scenarios are of interest: a city during normal operation and a city during natural or man-made disasters (such as accidents, failures, hurricanes, earthquakes or terrorist attacks). Terraswarm is hosted at the University of California-Berkeley with collaborators from California Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California-San Diego, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas-Dallas, and the University of Washington.

“STARnet is working on tomorrow’s technology and also developing tomorrow’s technologists,” added Rogers. “Today’s graduate students are getting the hands-on experience they need to apply these breakthroughs to future Defense and commercial systems.”

Dr. Jeffery Rogers is a program manager working in DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office since June 2008, and holds a PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Robert Kiggans, IMS Chairman, will deliver a keynote address at the Collaboration and Interoperability Congress (www.3dcic.com) to be held on 21-23 May, 2013 in Colorado Springs, CO. The topic for his keynote address is:

“The Way Forward for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation“

With ever-increasing competition, consumer demand for better value and innovative products, and government pressure for sustainable production, manufacturers are faced with difficult challenges across their entire value chain. In today’s cross-border manufacturing environment, solutions to these challenges are often global and cross-sector in nature. The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) program was established to solve these challenges through collaborative, multi-lateral, and often cross-platform research. IMS has conducted over $600 million in research in member countries including the United States, European Union, Switzerland, Korea and Mexico in the areas of sustainable manufacturing, key technologies, energy efficiency, standards and interoperability, and education.

IMS offers international consortium building and coaching services provided at no charge to researchers from member countries, a listing of projects seeking partners, and a project database with valuable research information. IMS is also a premier sponsor of the World Manufacturing Forum where high-level government officials and industry executives discuss issues and solutions to challenges in manufacturing.

The 3D Collaboration & Interoperability Congress is dedicated to fostering and improving collaboration and interoperability in product design, development and manufacturing.

Manufacturing is a distributed business, usually involving global design teams and supply chains. World-class manufacturing cannot happen unless people work together effectively, collaborating from any location, and sharing product data safely, accurately and confidently.

Now in its tenth year, CIC is the only industry and CAD-neutral event in the world addressing collaboration and interoperability in product development, manufacturing and business communications. This makes it an essential forum to get an unbiased perspective to help guide product development, manufacturing and IT strategies in these mission-critical areas.

In this climate of uncertainty, what is the way forward to advance manufacturing and innovation to provide growth and prosperity?

As the world climbs out of the economic crisis, policy makers have recognized manufacturing’s contribution to economic success as a strategic pillar to economic health. In response, governments are scrambling to create favorable conditions for growth while industry is faced with volatile and highly competitive market conditions. Investors are reluctant to jump into the high-risk marketplace, and manufacturers are not always willing to use reserves to expand their business.

Adding to the complexity of a globalized marketplace, countries struggle with local cries for stricter import regulations, raw material control, and limits on technology transfer. Does the focus to bring jobs home mean we must forgo international cooperation to solve manufacturing challenges and advance technology? As jobs do come home, what’s next for emerging economies?

The World Manufacturing Forum, which will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center, 22-23 October 2013 in Washington, D.C., USA, seeks to answer these important questions.

With the theme of “The Way Forward to Global Prosperity Through Intelligent Manufacturing Collaboration,” the Forum intends to focus on cooperation to create a global environment for sustainable economic success through sharing resources, creating and supporting common platforms for standards and interoperability for emerging technologies, solving storage and knowledge-mining challenges for ever-increasing amounts of data, and finding innovative ways to leverage applied R&D investments. Because technology and skills are key innovation differentiators, the Forum will also discuss the role of educational institutions, companies, and unions in training the next-generation of workers in the highly technical field of manufacturing.

The Forum aims to bring together high-level industrialists, policy makers, and key societal stakeholders across the globe for a cross-exchange of ideas on major macroeconomic trends and manufacturing innovation. The Forum is sponsored by the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems program and its member countries and is open to international sponsorship from government, industry, and institutions.

Save the date now and make plans to attend. Visit www.worldmanufacturingforum.org for information as it becomes available.

RAPID Additive Manufacturing Solutions

Venue: David Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, PA, United States

With the U.S. government considering additive manufacturing as a transformational technology, five federal agencies – the Department of Defense, Department of Commerce, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration – are investing $45 million toward the newly created National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII).

With the recent establishment of NAMII headquarters in Youngstown, Ohio, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has decided that its additive manufacturing event, RAPID, will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa., on June 10–13, 2013, to leverage the collaboration and innovation that will be the cornerstone of the new institute.

RAPID is North America’s definitive additive manufacturing event and the longest running industry forum for promoting the advancements and latest technology developments that combine 3D imaging with additive processes and 3D printing.
Exhibiting at RAPID 2013 will showcase your company’s products and innovations, gain exposure in the industry, and build relationships that lead to future sales. If your company offers equipment, materials, software or services that can help manufacturers design and develop new products – you need to exhibit at RAPID 2013!

Join NAMII in supporting RAPID 2013. To register or for more information, visit rapid.sme.org today!
